Bottega Veneta
Bottega Veneta Clothing History
Bottega Veneta was founded in 1966 in Vicenza, Italy, by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro. Although the house is now known for ready-to-wear clothing as well as accessories, its early reputation was built primarily on exceptional leather craftsmanship. The name translates as “Venetian Workshop”, reflecting its roots in the Veneto region and its focus on skilled, hand-finished production. Bottega Veneta developed its signature intrecciato woven-leather technique during its early years, and this discreet approach to luxury shaped the brand’s identity: refined materials, careful construction and little or no visible branding. Clothing became a more prominent part of the business over time, particularly as the brand expanded internationally from the late 20th century onward. Under creative director Tomas Maier, who led the house from 2001 to 2018, Bottega Veneta’s womenswear and menswear gained wider recognition for their understated, luxurious designs, rich textures and relaxed Italian tailoring. In 2018, Daniel Lee brought a sharper, more fashion-driven direction, helping create major demand for the label’s modern silhouettes and accessories. Matthieu Blazy became creative director in 2021 and has continued to develop Bottega Veneta’s clothing through inventive craftsmanship, including garments that challenge expectations of leather, knitwear and everyday wardrobe pieces. Today, Bottega Veneta clothing remains closely linked to the brand’s original values: quiet luxury, Italian artistry and a focus on quality over prominent logos.
